Organizational Development for Advancing Equal Rights of LGBTIQ+ People
Power of Pride is looking for a highly committed and capable consultant to assist in the development of a Workbook for LGBTIQ+ Community-based Organizations in Asia and Africa addressing the themes of working sustainably, building inclusive leadership and inculcating socio-political preparedness. This Terms of Reference details the Objectives, Scope of Work, Key Deliverables and Budget of this assignment. The deadline to submit an application is February 19, 2025.
About Power of Pride
Power of Pride (PoP) is an international development program, implemented by an alliance of COC Nederland, Pan Africa ILGA, and ILGA Asia. The program’s vision is to work towards diverse and inclusive societies where LGBTIQ+ people can participate to their full potential. LGBTIQ+ Community- Based Organizations (CBOs) are the molecules of our work under the Power of Pride program that runs across 22 countries in Asia and Africa. In order to harness important learnings on this crucial aspect of the program, a Community of Practice (CoP) on Organizational Development for Advancing Equal Rights of LGBTIQ+ People was launched in July 2024. The CoP is a convergence of LGBTQI+ experts and activists with great interest in the critical topic of development of LGBTQI+ Community-based organizations, with similar interest in advancing equal rights of LGBTIQ+ People.
Background and Context
LGBTIQ+ movements in Africa and Asia are doing groundbreaking and critical work – with increasingly restrained funding and structural support – and have been fundamental to the strengthening of civil societies in these regions. However, programs addressing organizational development, leadership and capacity strengthening have not kept pace with the evolving needs and specific challenges of LGBTIQ+ organizations. Keeping these realities in mind, the CoP on Organizational Development of LGBTQI+ people was set up by the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Working Group of Power of Pride as a learning platform, and responds to the following thematic areas answering learning questions as put forward by the CoP as follows:
- Developing and Sustaining Inclusive Leadership: How can transformative leadership be fostered among under-represented groups in LGBTIQ+ CBOS, such as LBQ women, trans people, trans sex workers, and people living with disabilities?
- Working Sustainably: What strategies can be employed to retain trained staff in LGBTIQ+ CBOs, and how can the various push-pull factors (in terms of resources and capacity) that affect staff retention be addressed?
- Socio-Political Preparedness: How can LGBTIQ+ CBOs be better prepared for a crisis, particularly in relation to the anti-rights and anti-gender opposition and other emergencies?
This research and learning initiative aim to inclusively address these identified themes and the corresponding questions in the context of developing and fostering transformative and inclusive leadership amongst LGBTIQ+ organizations in Africa and Asia, while identifying strategies to understand and address staff attrition of LGBTIQ+ CBOs; and also, to better equip LGBTIQ+ CBOs to respond to anti-rights and anti-gender narratives and policies. It is widely known that linear understandings of leadership and organizational development often do not respond to the needs of LGBTIQ+ organizations. This study seeks to inform transformative and inclusive leadership, advocacy, resilience-building, and policy interventions.
Objectives
The members of the CoP, along with the PoP MEL Working Group, are co-developing a practical guide that aims to equip and support LGBTIQ+ organizations with the understanding, tools and frameworks to move the needle towards working sustainably, with inclusive leadership, in achieving socio-political preparedness. This practical guide, envisioned as a workbook, will be an organizational resource with structured exercises and practical strategies to address the needs of organizations. Moreover, it will help in developing systems leadership frameworks that provide insights to organizations for galvanizing diverse stakeholders around a common mission in order to facilitate the systemic change needed for sustainability. The result seeks to be a comprehensive workbook that provides useful pathways toward ethical responses for organizations facing the maelstrom of sustainable development and socio-political challenges, within the context of anti-gender and anti-rights narratives. The consultant will provide their research and writing expertise towards co-creating this practical guide, alongside the CoP members and the PoP MEL Working Group.
This Workbook will start with a premise of collective leadership: that shared accountability and engaging different perspectives in addressing complex socio-political challenges is something that we do better in collaboration. It will empower the communities it serves to co-build sustainable solutions and navigate systemic change together by providing tools and frameworks to build equitable leadership structures centered around values of co-creation, well-being and inclusivity.

À propos de Power of Pride
